Obesity in horses, like in humans, is a growing problem. In particular, the austere breeds of horses and ponies quickly become overweight due to their efficient use of energy. Obesity poses a major health risk and it is therefore important to prevent your horse from becoming overweight or to ensure that it regains a healthy weight.
Is my horse overweight?
A horse or pony is too fat when the ribs are not easily felt with the flat of the hand. At a healthy weight, the ribs are just barely visible, but can be felt. If the horse or pony is seriously overweight, fat pads develop around the withers and tail and fat is stored in the manes, which can therefore feel quite hard. A large belly size does not necessarily mean that the horse is too fat or heavy. The size of the belly is largely determined by the intestinal filling (with roughage), the abdominal muscles and the build of the horse. A pony, for example, is naturally more abdominal than most horses.
